In accordance with the National Policy of Education (1986) Government of India Started Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in each district of the country. These are co-educational residential schools fully financed and administered by Government of India through an autonomous organisation, Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti. The basic objectives of these Vidyalayas are to provide access to quality education to the children predominantly from rural areas. Modestly started with two Vidyalayas in the year 1986, the Network of Navodaya Vidyalayas has massively grown across the country covering 595 districts.
JNV Kannur was established in the year 1987 at chendayad in the Patyam Grama panchayath of Cheruvanchery village under Thalassery Taluk in Kannur district in a land of about twenty five acres donated on transfer of deed by the government of Kerala.The first batch of class VI students was admitted on 19-01-1988 which passed out of class XII in March CBSE exam of 1994. JNV Kannur is affiliated with CBSE New Delhi.

JNV Kannur is located at Valliyayi village of Kannur District, 18 km away from Tellicherry Railway station/ Bus stand. Those who are coming by Train or bus may alight at Tellicherry Railway Station/bus station. Buses are available from the New Bus stand which is five minutes walk from the Railway station. They may take buses going towards Kuthuparamba /Mattannur/Iritty and alight at Pookodu bus stop and continue their journey by bus plying from Pookodu to Panoor and can get down at Pathipalam bus stop at minimum fare. JNV Kannur is located at a distance of 4 KM from Pathipalam bus stop. Autos are available on hired basis at a maximum fare of Rs.75.

The starting troubles of the Vidyalaya were braved through and brought to the present status by the collective and team work of a set of dedicated set of principals, teachers and students. The glory of the Vidyalaya in the academic and non academic field has been brought to greater sheen and finish by the industry and commitment of the subsequent team of principals, teachers, non-teaching staff and students. This year the institution is sending out the twentyfirst batch of class XII to win laurels and achieve greater heights.
